Gary Carter Jr, candidate for Louisiana Senate District 7, is the current Louisiana State Representative for District 102, which encompasses the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans.
Gary was born and raised in New Orleans, on the Westbank, in Algiers. Gary’s grandparents helped raise him, and even though his parents were young, they surrounded him with family, raised him in the church, and invested heavily in his education.
He attended St. Andrew the Apostle Elementary School and graduated from Archbishop Shaw High School. Gary then earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Xavier University, where he was President of the Political Science Club. He earned his law degree with a certification in environmental law from Tulane Law School, where he argued onto the Tulane Moot Court Board.
Following law school, Gary practiced law at the prestigious McGlinchey Stafford law firm, specializing in products liability litigation. Gary then served as Senior Counsel for Entergy Corporation, the Fortune 500 Public Utility Company headquartered in New Orleans. Gary resigned from Entergy to run for elective office and entered private practice.
On October 24, 2015, Gary was elected to represent Algiers in the Louisiana Legislature, becoming just the second African-American to represent District 102. Following his election, his fellow legislators elected Gary to the powerful Appropriations Committee, which prepares and appropriates Louisiana’s $32 billion budget. Gary also serves on the Joint Legislative Committee on the Budget, the Education committee, and the House Select Leadership committee. Gary was re-elected outright in 2019. I am putting myself out there and stepping up to run for office because I can make a difference. I am not a career politician, nor do I come from a family that has held any political office. I’m not a “good ole boy.” I believe in term limits for each elected position. I am a Roman Catholic with strong Christian values. I see people struggling. There will be difficult decisions and I WILL keep God center in my life. I plan to get into Heaven and the only thing that I can take with me is my name and integrity. I am Pro-Life. ‘State Representative Mack Cormier has always been on the front lines when it comes to passionately fighting for his constituents. In a time when JOBS are a necessity and certain groups want to hinder the ability for people to make an honest living Representative Cormier has stood strong for us. It is time we stand for him and make him our next State Senator. A proven record of supporting people over politics!’ Learn more on Mack Cormier's website. Then, read his response to our survey.
